Surrey Accountants Stewart & Co. Celebrate 60 Years In Business

April 5th, 2019

At Stewart & Co. we’re extremely proud to have recently celebrated our 60th anniversary.

Originally founded in October 1958, when Purves Stewart took the bold step of creating his own firm of Chartered Accountants in Camberley, Surrey. Now in 2018, we are pleased to celebrate 60 Years’ Service during which we have grown to be one of the leading independent firms of Accountants in Surrey.

Anniversary Celebrations

As part of our anniversary celebrations, we held an event at the iconic Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. At the event we were joined by long standing clients, local dignitaries and staff who enjoyed hospitality and light entertainment. The whole event was in support of Disability Initiative, a charity based in Camberley, that specialises in the provision of care and rehabilitation services to adults with complex physical disabilities and acquired brain injury.

Chief Executive of the charity Lucy Brown, supported by one of the charity’s care support staff gave very moving speeches on the night. An amount in excess of £1,750 was raised for the charity.

Present Day

Today Stewart & Co. is based in offices at Knoll Road, Camberley, and has a a workforce of forty plus staff. We act as Accountants and Business Advisors to businesses across Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire with clients in a variety of industry sectors, trades and professions. The firm’s philosophy has always been to offer a service based upon the highest professional standards, never forgetting that it is the relationship the partners and staff have with their clients that has made Stewart & Co. such a successful business.

Managing Partner David Hartley has seen much change during his many years with the firm. “I joined Stewart & Co. in 1990, becoming a partner in 1992. Our firm has had to evolve like all other successful businesses, to keep pace with changes within the profession and with legislation. We are currently getting ready for Making Tax Digital, effective from April 2019, which will impact many of our clients, and place greater emphasis on timely reporting to HM Revenue & Customs and with it the increased use of online accounting. As with all other changes in legislation over the last sixty years, we will work with our clients and guide them every step of the way.”

“We have been there before; I can vividly recollect the introduction of Self-Assessment Income Tax back in 1996, which was a significant change in tax legislation. Back then the profession and our clients had concerns on how do we cope with this, over twenty years on it feels like we have never lived without it! Despite all these difficult times in the business and financial world, plus ever increasing compliance and regulation being thrown at us all, our focus remains to help each and every client through the various challenges they face. I must say I am privileged to have a loyal and experienced team working along side me, delivering a quality service year on year. So here’s to the next sixty years!”

Thank You

The partners David Hartley, Phil Clennell, David McCusker, Gary Robinson and Lucy Evans (pictured above at the entrance of Royal Military Academy) wish to thank all their clients for their loyalty and support. We look forward to offering you many more years of service and continuing to supporting businesses across Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire.

The partners would also like to say a special thank you in the history of Stewart & Co to its former partners Neil Doody and Andrew Cousins, for their valued contributions along the way.
